Introduction

Following the detection of a Bluetongue (BT) serotype 8 infection in the province of Luxembourg, a monitoring was organized on all cattle and sheep farms within a 5 km radius around the infected farm. This monitoring confirmed that the BTV-8 virus has circulated in Belgium. No cases of Serotype 4 were found.

Due to the discovery of BTV-8, the whole of Belgium became one restricted area as from 28 March 2019.

The FASFC therefore applies all measures provided for in the legislation as from 28 March 2019 (Royal Decree of 7 May 2008 and Regulation (EC) No 1266/2007).

Specific

Belgium as a whole became an restricted zone for BTV-8. This choice to immediately extend the restricted zone with a radius of 150 km (provided for by European legislation) to the entire territory means that ruminants can still be moved throughout Belgium with minimal hindrance to national trade.

The precise zoning for BTV-8 and other serotypes can be consulted on the European Commission website: https://ec.europa.eu/food/animals/animal-diseases/control-measures/bluetongue_en (Restriction zones established by the Member States -> Map).

The FASFC recommends the vaccination of ruminants to protect them. Vaccines against serotype 8 are available from the wholesalers and distributors of veterinary medicines.

With regard to EU intra-Community trade

All ruminants can be traded without BT-specific conditions to other zones where BTV-8 is also present in France, Cyprus and Switzerland and parts of Germany.

For trade to areas that are free from BTV-8, the conditions to be respected (Regulation (EC) No 1266/2007) are included in the E504 procedure, that is available on our website: http://www.favv.be/santeanimale/fievrecatarrhale/mesures.asp

These measures gives details about the use of insect repellents, describes the tests and vaccines to be use and the quarantine measures to be taken so safe trade can continue to these areas

With regard to international trade

The certification conditions laid down in the relevant protocols concluded between Belgium and the non-EU countries (third countries) will be scrupulously respected.
